While other places may claim to be the "Home of the Hot Dog" - us Jersians know the real deal. We take our Hot Dogs pretty seriously in the Garden State. We want to know where are the best places in our great state to get real, kick ass dogs - worthy of being called Jersey Dogs! Like our Burger, Pizza and Wings section, we are going to require that a place be recommended before it is added and in addition you need to tell us what make this place so special. So if you have a place let us know!
We are going to start out with the two that are pretty much know statewide, and perhaps worldwide as the home of Jersey Dogs - Rutts & Hot Dog Johnny's. Both are cultural icons of New Jersey and will the kickoff for our list of the best dogs in the state!

Travelers driving through the woods of northwestern New Jersey along Route 46 can't miss Hot Dog Johnny's -- especially not its rustic wooden sign painted with a giant fully loaded wiener. Just down the street from the Delaware Water Gap, it looks like a mirage from the 1950s: a large low building with plenty of picnic tables by a river. It's often surrounded by lines of people drooling for dogs. The place opened in 1944, and visitors can still see the first tiny stand, only in use for a single year before the dogs (prepared with a secret recipe) took off with a vengeance. Be sure to order a birch beer to go with your dog.

It would shock Jerseyites to learn that some people boil their hot dogs in water. These crazy people need to go to Rutt's Hut, promptly, to learn what happens when you stick a hot dog in boiling oil. The place is truly great, an amazingly tasty throwback that sits on an unremarkable block in Clifton and serves what is generally agreed-upon as the best hot dog in this dog-loving state. See, what happens when you boil a hot dog in oil long enough is that it rips, and becomes a "ripper," as Rutt's menu calls it. It also becomes crispy, oily and ridiculously delicious. If you leave it in longer, it becomes "cremated," an especially greasy option that, along with the "traditional," completes the Hut's hot dog oeuvre.
